Delta Blues, Rhythm and Blues, and Rock & Roll

This is an educational, non-commercial, web site dedicated to Mississippi Delta Blues, 1950s Rhythm and Blues, New Orleans music from the 50's and 60's, and American Rock & Roll. We list both popular and esoteric artists, and hard-to-find information for pioneers of rock & roll. This is not a listing of popular or top-selling artists, but rather a glimpse into the recordings that built the foundation of American rock & roll and Mississippi Delta R&B during the 1950s and 1960s.

Origins and History

There are eight pages in the section, Origin of Rhythm and Blues, and Rock and Roll, that chronicle the short history of American rhythm and blues, rock and roll, the influences that made these music genres popular, the artists that contributed to these genres, and references for further study. Not all artists are included here. The history described here focuses on the Mississippi Delta artists who recorded during the 1950s and 1960s, in addition to other artists, as their contributions influenced the development of rock and roll. The limited discrography traces steps from the Swing / Big Band era of the 1940s through the development of 1960s Soul. We do not include so-called British invasion music. We apologize to any artist not included who contributed, but due to space limitations many are not included.
